DescriptionBinoculars; Oculus Hoya 16 x 50 binoculars (a) and case (b). a) Binoculars - black binoculars with leather strap attached, two objective lens covers with “Hoya” in silver, one eyepiece lens cover with “Hoya” in silver (the proper right cover is missing), and two strips of red embossing tape that read “Samuel K. Taylor // USS Intrepid”. The focus knob plate has “Japan” imprinted on it and “AE33” near it. The body near the eye cups has “Oculus // Hoya // Coated optic” and “16 x 50 // Field 3.5° // No. 44712” printed in white.
b) Case - black leather case with adjustable strap, hinged lid, and silver front fastener. The interior is lined with red fabric and a strip of green felt. On the interior of lid are three strips of red embossing tape that read “Samuel K. Taylor // USS Intrepid CVS 11 // V 6 Division”. On the interior of front fastener strap is “Samuel // K. // Taylor” written in black ink. At the bottom of the case, a round paper label was found, the front reads “Japan // Telescopes // Inspection Institute” and the back reads “No. P 186236”.
