Letter; June 4 [1945]. The letter is to his wife and discusses his time aboard USS Intrepid in the Pacific and that he is homesick for his family. He discusses Intrepid's activity and movements in the Pacific against the Japanese, including the kamikaze attacks and attempted attacks they have experienced. Gardner also discusses his anxiety to get back to his wife and daughter, Anne, and his plans for their future once he returns to them. Gardner explains that he is attempting to get this letter past the censors without their intervention by rolling it up and hiding it in the money he is sending back home. The letter is handwritten and every part of the paper is utilized.

Envelope; to "Mr. Arthur Earl Gardner // 118 Union St. // Watertown, N.Y.", with a return address of "The Secretary of the Navy // Washington // Official Business." Post marked December 28, 1945.

Letter; December 27, 1945. Addressed to "My dear Mr. Gardner," the letter congratulates and thanks Gardner for his service in the Navy during World War II. It is signed by James Forrestal.
