DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal official U.S. Navy image of sailors transferring boxes of supplies from the hangar deck of USS Intrepid to the deck below. In the back left corner of the image is a large stack of crates. Some have a label that reads “TREY” affixed to one end. Eight crew members wearing dungarees and one officer wearing a khaki uniform stand around the stack of provisions. Four men wear dark ball caps, three wear white Dixie cup caps, and one man wears an officer’s cap. One man has dark skin, one man has medium-dark skin and the rest have light skin. One man wearing a dark work jacket is leaning over a large rectangular hatch opening in the hangar deck and appears to have just placed a crate on an angled platform acting as a slide. The hatch is surrounded on two sides, in the foreground and to the right of the image, by a rope barrier. There are three men, all with light skin, standing inside the opening to the deck below. Two have their arms outstretched to catch the crate coming down the platform. The third man stands behind them looking up at the crate. All of the men have dark hair and are wearing dungarees. Two are wearing white Dixie cup caps and one wears a dark ball cap. Behind the men is a bulkhead and watertight door. A dark stencil on the top of the door reads “Limited // Area”. There are partially obscured dark stencils with compartment numbers on the bulkhead to the left of the door.On View
