DescriptionNegative, Black and White; Horizontal official U.S. Navy negative (a) and paper envelope (b). Negative has been scanned so that positive image is visible. Negative (a) – Black and white image depicts the flight deck of USS Intrepid after a kamikaze attack. The crash-diving airplane opened a large gash in the wooden flight deck on the right side of the image. Seven crew members are standing around or bent over the damage. They are wearing dungarees and helmets. At least one crew member has light skin. Fire hoses and splintered debris are strewn across the deck. In the background of the image, the ship's island is partially visible along with anti-aircraft gun mounts, including a twin 5-inch gun mount and a quad 40mm gun mount. The image is slightly hazy with smoke from the attack. There are clouds in the sky.
Envelope (b) – Vertical brown paper envelope for negative (a), that has a half circle cut out at the bottom. Black stamp inscription on the envelope reads “No. // Name // Remarks”.
