DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal horizontal image of a crew member sitting at a desk and entering a record in the B Division office on USS Intrepid. The sailor has dark hair and medium skin, and he is wearing a U.S. Navy chambray work shirt with rolled up sleeves and an extensive sweat stain on the back. His white undershirt is visible. The man also is wearing a watch on his left wrist and a ring with a large, dark stone on his left hand. This hand is resting on a sheet of paper printed with an illegible table of values. His right hand rests on the keys of what appears to be an adding machine, next to which is a mug printed with a stylized version of the Playboy logo. The bulkheads in the background of the photograph have a variety of charts and tables fastened to them. The leftmost of these tables has six printed columns visible. The first header, which is partially obscured, reads “Feed Tanks” and has a series of numbers printed or handwritten in a column below. The edge of a telephone is visible to the left and partially obscures this column. The second header reads “Forward Eng Room.” The column below is split into two parts, one of which has printed in each row a group of four numbers and the letter W arranged in a diamond shape, and the other of which is empty except for two rows with handwritten numbers. Additionally, the sixth row has one cell, in which is printed “Aft Eng.” The third column is headed “Fuel Oil Suction” and is subdivided into three columns, subheaded with “No.,” “In Use,” and “STBY.” Some cells have printed numbers, some have handwritten numbers, and some are overlaid with handwritten X’s. The fourth column is headed “Boilers” and subdivided identically to the third column, with similar entries as well. The fifth column is headed “Fresh Water” and is subdivided in the same way as the second column, with similar entries. The sixth column is headed “Evaps” (evaporators) and is subdivided in the same way as the third and fourth columns, with similar entries.
To the right of that chart is another large table of values with smaller cells, which is mostly illegible. The left half of the chart is headed “FRESH” and the right half is headed “Feed.” Above this table of values is a stack of papers fastened to a dark material which is itself fastened the wall; the view of these papers are cut off by the top of the photograph, and the handwriting on the lines on the front of the paper is illegible. To the right of those papers is another chart, directly over the crew member’s head. The printed header reads “Boiler Status Board,” and the columns have legible headers and values. Another printed header lower down on the chart splits it in two horizontally, and reads “Dissolved Oxygen Tests.” Other illegible charts and sheets of paper are pinned to the wall to the right of the man.
There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink.
Back has “5” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
