DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal horizontal image of two crew members working on the lower level of one of the fire rooms (boiler rooms) on USS Intrepid. Both sailors have light skin and dark hair, and both are wearing U.S. Navy dungaree working uniforms. Darrel Merath is in the foreground. His uniform is splattered with white paint and his work shirt is soaked in sweat, and he is wearing a headset for a sound-powered phone. His name “Merath” is printed on the seat of his pants. The man in the background is standing on a raised portion of deck and reaching up with his left arm, his hand holding a lever attached to the main fuel valve. He is wearing a dark band on his left wrist. In the background at left, a work table is visible with the B Division boiler symbol painted on the front. To the right of the men, the boiler air pressure gauge is visible at the far left corner of the boiler. The water and steam pressure gauges are visible in the center of the boiler front. A soot blower is visible at the level of the deck below the water and steam pressure gauges, and a lighting-off stick protrudes from a pipe attached to the deck plates just left of the soot blower. Two burners are visible at the far right of the photograph, with atomizers inserted. Steam and water piping is visible in the background, and illegible instruction panels are attached to the front of the boiler in several places. There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink. Back has “8” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
