DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official vertical image of three officers visiting USS Intrepid’s number two fire room. The camera is pointed down the firing aisle of the ship’s number three boiler, where three sailors with light skin wearing U.S. Navy dungaree working uniforms are operating the boiler at image right. One of the sailors is wearing a sound-powered telephone headset. At image left, Commander Michael V. Martini is gesturing toward the boiler, in conversation with Rear Admiral William B. Sieglaff who is visiting the fire room. Behind them is a third officer, mostly obscured. All three officers have light skin. Commander Martini is wearing a U.S. Navy officer’s khaki work uniform, and Rear Admiral Sieglaff is wearing a U.S. Navy officer’s dress blue uniform. Valves, steam pipes and smoke periscopes are visible above the personnel, and boiler steam and feed water pressure gauges are visible at image right.
