DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal horizontal image of a crew member operating a soot blower on the lower level of one of the fire rooms (boiler rooms) on USS Intrepid. The sailor has light skin and dark hair with a small mustache, and he is wearing a U.S. Navy chambray work shirt that is soaked in sweat. Letters on the front of his shirt are illegible. He has his right hand on a crank that opens the steam pipe for a soot blower on one of the boilers. The side of the boiler is visible in the background, along with more steam pipes. The bottom of one of the smoke periscopes is visible above the man’s head. There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink. Back has “9” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
