DescriptionJacket; U.S. Marine Corps women's dress blue coat, worn by USMC judge advocate Lily Gridley. Coat has collar and four large gold buttons on the proper left panel with four button holes on the proper right panel. There are three small gold buttons on either sleeve cuff and one small gold button on either shoulder tab. The gold buttons have a raised border edge with an image of an eagle with outstretched wings grasping a fouled anchor. There are thirteen stars along the top interior edge. The collar, shoulder tabs and button flaps at cuffs are lined with red piping. The jacket has a faux pocket on the proper left chest. There is a small hole for an insignia on the each of the collar points. A black fabric hanging loop is attached to the interior center back collar. A white fabric label with black printed and stamped text on the interior lower proper right panel reads: “Coat // Marine Corps depot of supplies // Philadelphia, PA // Date 10-?-54 Job. No. 14?4 // Name Major Lily H. Gridley // Address Washington D.C. // Size neck 20 collar height // material blue serge”. There appears to be another handwritten inscription at the bottom of the label that is faded and obscured by the black thread that attaches the label to the coat.
