DescriptionSlide, Color; Personal horizontal image of a Douglas F4D-1 Skyray from VF-162 catching on an arresting cable. The plane is numbered, “4814 // 112”. The optical landing system (OLS, also referred to as the meatball) is visible on the port side catwalk. The USS Newport News (CA–148), a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser, is sailing off of Intrepid’s port side. The water is calm and the sky is cloudy. Captioned by photographer/donor, “Flight deck operations: Recovery”.Slide mount has “Dec 61” imprinted and “9” and “Made in U.S.A.” printed in red and black on one side. “Kodachrome // transparency // processed by Technicolor” and stars printed in red on the other side.
