The Pierce Matthews Correspondence collection consists primarily of letters and postcards to his family. The correspondence spans a portion his service in the U.S. Navy, from 1949–1962, with the majority concentrating on 1960–1962. In addition to letters and postcards, there were often photos, clippings, and other documents enclosed with and described in various letters.

Topics in the letters include family and daily life, opinions on raising a family; chess; coin collecting; Matthews' dating life; promotions on board; Russian relations; the Cold War; holidays; leave; career goals; promotions; Cadillac, Michigan; naval transfers; Germany; the Soviet Union; the Weapons Division; Portsmouth, Virginia; Newport News, Virginia; Sidewinder missiles; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Golfo de Palmas, Sardinia; the Mediterranean; Tyrrhenian Sea; Rome, Italy; Cannes, France; and Barcelona, Spain.
