DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of a photograph of a photograph. The original image is a division photograph under the island. The photograph likely depicts one of the divisions in the Gunnery Department, the department to which Pierce Y. Matthews was assigned. The enlisted men are wearing dress blue jumpers and white “Dixie cup” hats. The officers on either side of the division are wearing dark uniforms and peaked caps. The front row is kneeling and the back row is standing. One enlisted sailor has dark skin, and the rest of the officers and men have light skin. The island is looming in the background and “Beware of jet blast” is across the island. The photograph shows tape holding the image to a black background. There are fingerprints or discolorations around the image. There is a white border around the photograph and scalloped edges on the left and right. The back has “Part of my division” written in black ink and “Polaroid”, “47”, and “6” stamped in blue and black. The photograph accompanied a letter dated November 22, 1961.
