DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white. Official horizontal image of Captain J. Lloyd Abbott, the commanding officer of USS Intrepid, sitting in the captain's chair on the navigation bridge in the ship's island. This is a humorous, posed photograph. Abbott is wearing a U.S. Navy officer summer white uniform and a pith helmet. He is holding a rifle and a horn. Abbott has light skin, and he is frowning at the camera. There is a potted palm tree between the captain's chair and bulkhead. A sign at Abbott's feet reads "The Captain's Palm // Approach no // closer than // 10 feet" in black ink. A light-skinned officer wearing a U.S. Navy officer summer white uniform and combination cap stands in front of him. He is watering the palm tree with a silver carafe. There is a clipboard on the window next to the chair that reads "Rules: // 1. Port is Left // 2. Starboard is // Right // 3. The end with // the anchors // goes first: handwritten in black ink.

Back of image has "CVA-11 2091-L-9-61 Date Sept 18 1961 // U.S.S. Intrepid (CVA-11) // Subject: Capt. J.L. Abbott, Jr with // his palm tree and water box // Ens. W. Deneen // Official U.S. Navy photograph // not for publication // unless officially released" printed in black ink and handwritten in blue ink.

Donor note reads “Capt Abbot Ketcher did a piece on this.”
