DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official horizontal image of two sailors and two officers standing at Main Control in the forward engine room on USS Intrepid. In the foreground of the image, an officer in a U.S. Navy officer’s khaki work uniform with commander’s insignia is standing, arms akimbo, behind an enlisted sailor wearing a U.S. Navy dungaree working uniform with the sleeves rolled up. The sailor is leaning forward, supported by one arm resting on a throttle wheel. The officer has light skin and medium hair; he is Commander Michael V. Martini. The sailor has light skin and dark hair, and he is wearing a headset for a sound-powered telephone. The sailor is peering toward a hole on the throttle board, through which he can see the propeller shaft reflected in a mirror (this is not visible in the image). Dials and gauges are visible on the throttle board. Behind and mostly obscured by the two men in the foreground, there is another officer and another enlisted sailor on the left of the image. They both have dark hair and light skin. There is a white border around the image.

A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “PRESCOTT, MM3, on #1 Main Engine throttle peers thru the slot at the mirror image of #1 shaft in the aft end of the engine room. The barbar [barber] pole painted shaft is stopped” printed in black ink.
