DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official vertical image of a group of four sailors working on repairing storm damage to a catwalk on USS Intrepid, while two officers look on. The sailors are wearing U.S. Navy dungaree working uniforms with hooded jackets. One sailor, who has dark skin and is wearing a welding mask pushed back on his head, is crouched on the catwalk. The rest of the sailors and officers have light skin. The officers are wearing U.S. Navy officers’ khaki work uniforms and hats, and buttoned up foul weather jackets. There is a white border around the image.A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “The “Mistral” of 4-5 Nov 61, knocked hell out of the port and stbd flight deck catwalks. The “R” Division personnel, “Chips” EIDEN in charge, fabricate and weld it all back up again, in the bay of Naples” printed in black ink.
