DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official horizontal image of an R Division sailor clearing debris from USS Intrepid’s starboard anchor. The anchor is partially lowered and hanging over the sea, and part of the ship’s bow is visible above and behind it. The sailor is wearing a U.S. Navy foul weather uniform, and he is suspended by ropes and pulleys from the hawsehole. Sparks are visible from the cutting torch in the sailor’s right hand, which he is using to cut a small chain which is wrapped around the anchor. Mud and more chains are visible on and around the anchor, as well as a partially sunken metal drum. There is a white border around the image.A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “And the Engineering Departments “R” Division came to the rescue. MAYNOR, SFM2, with one hand cuts away the old submarine nets with cutting torch while he hangs on with the other” printed in black ink.
