BiographyRoger W. Jones enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Lincoln, Nebraska, as a seaman first class on November 10, 1942. He served in Torpedo Squadron 18 (VF-18) on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) in 1944. Jones was a gunner in a TBM/TBF Avenger that was shot down over Luzon in the Philippines on October 29, 1944. He was listed as missing in action from that date until January 17, 1945. During that time, Jones, along with the pilot and gunner in the Avenger, were assisted by guerrillas in the Philippines. Jones was discharged from the Navy on September 12, 1945, at which point his rating was aviation ordnanceman first class (AOM1).
