DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal horizontal image of a crew member operating a soot blower on the lower level of one of the fire rooms (boiler rooms) on USS Intrepid. The sailor has light skin and dark hair, and he is wearing a U.S. Navy chambray work shirt that is soaked in sweat. Sweat is visible in beads on his face. The man’s right hand is on a crank that opens the steam pipe for a soot blower on one of the boilers. The side of the boiler is visible in the background along with more steam pipes, and the bottom of a smoke periscope can be seen above the man’s head. There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink. Back has “11” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
